Paris, 30 June 2022 (AFP) – Amnesty International described the March attack on a theater in the besieged Ukrainian city of Mariupol as a “war crime”, according to a report released Wednesday night.
Oksana Pokalchuk, head of Amnesty International’s Ukraine branch, told AFP, “Until now we could talk about a possible war crime. Now we can clearly say that it is a war crime committed by the Russian armed forces.”
“These explosions were caused by something very big: two 500-pound bombs dropped from an airplane,” adds Pokalchuk.
Based on witness testimonies and public death reports, “Amnesty International believes that at least a dozen people were killed in the attack, but it is likely that no more deaths were recorded.”
The site was considered a refuge for civilians after the Russian occupation of Ukraine, which began on February 24.
“There were a lot of military targets in Mariupol. They (the Russians) clearly chose a civilian target,” says Pokalchuk.
