Russia says it is keeping more than 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers in prison

Russia’s Interior Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said on Thursday that the country is holding more than 6,000 Ukrainian military personnel in custody, a day after the biggest exchange between the two countries.

Yesterday, it was reported that 144 captured soldiers from both sides were exchanged, as pro-Russian authorities initially announced in the Ukraine and Kyiv regions.

Konashenkov confirmed the swap operation today by announcing the daily war bulletin of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

“The total number of captured or surrendered Ukrainian soldiers is over 6,000.”

Yesterday, Ukraine released 144 separatist fighters from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, while Russia and pro-Russians handed over 144 Ukrainian soldiers to Kiev.

Among the second group are 95 members of the resistance at the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, 43 of which belong to the Azov Battalion.

On the 7th, Russian Defense Minister Serguey Shoigu stated that the army captured 6,489 Ukrainian soldiers during the armed conflict that began on February 24.
