British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is facing a new political headache after a prominent Conservative Party figure resigned on Friday after allegations that he molested two men while intoxicated.
Chris Pincher, who is in charge of parliamentary voting discipline for Conservative MPs, resigned after accusations of abusing two people, a new political scandal for the already weakened head of government.
In his letter of resignation dated Thursday, Pincher said he stepped down after “drinking too much” and “embarrassing me and others” the night before.
According to British media, the 52-year-old Conservative MP was accused of abusing two people, including one of the MPs, at the Carlton Club, a private club in central London, which led to complaints in the Conservative Party.
Pincher resigned as party disciplinary chairman, but his stay as a member of parliament led to calls for dismissal and an internal investigation.
“Tries should not ignore possible sexual assault,” said Angela Rayner, the number two member of the main opposition Labor Party.
This case is the latest in similar scandals in the Conservative Party in recent months.
In May, a lawmaker suspected of rape was arrested and later released on bail. In April, another Conservative MP resigned after he was caught watching a porn video on his smartphone during a session of Parliament. A former lawmaker was also sentenced to 18 months in prison in May for sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl.
Boris Johnson’s government has also been shaken by the scandal of parties celebrating on Downing Street, despite the government’s restrictions during the covid pandemic.
