A ship split in two and sank in the waters off Hong Kong, China, after being hit by Tropical Storm Chaba (2) today. Twenty-seven people are missing, according to the Hong Kong government.
The engineering vessel was 160 nautical miles southwest of Hong Kong at the time of the accident. The ship was “severely damaged and split in two”.
After receiving the notification around 7:25 PM (Friday 8:25 PM EST), help was sent to the site.
Officials said three of the 30 crew members were rescued and hospitalized at 3 p.m. local time.
Footage provided by the Hong Kong government shows a person being rescued as waves crash against the deck of the semi-submerged ship.
Other crew members may have been swept away by the waves before the first rescue helicopter arrived, according to the three survivors, officials said.
Typhoon Chaba formed in the center of the South China Sea and made landfall in southern Guangdong province on Saturday afternoon.
Officials stated that the ship’s location recorded winds of 144 kilometers per hour and waves up to 10 meters high.
Rescuers will expand the search area “due to the large number of missing persons” and extend the operation into the night if weather conditions permit.
