According to confidential reports quoted by French magazine Marianne, the Eiffel Tower is rusty and in need of a complete repair, but instead gets a €60m paint job ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Built by Gustave Eiffel in the late 19th century, the 324-metre-high wrought-iron tower is among the planet’s most visited tourist attractions, with nearly 6 million visitors each year.
However, confidential reports from experts cited by the publication show that the monument is in disrepair and riddled with rust.
“It’s simple: Gustave Eiffel will have a heart attack if he visits here,” an unnamed manager at the tower told Marianne magazine.
Societé d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel (SETE), the company that manages the tower, was not immediately reached for comment.
Now going through a €60m paint job in preparation for the 2024 Olympic Games, the tower has been repainted for the twentieth time.
Two new coats of paint were to be applied to the tower, but work delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the presence of lead in the old paint means only 5% of the original 30% will be treated. planned, Marianne said.
The magazine added that SETE had long resisted closing the tower because of lost tourist income.
