On Tuesday, US police said the attacker, who is suspected of opening fire during a July 4 parade in the Chicago suburb, had been planning the attack for weeks. He also wore women’s clothing to hide the tattoos on his face.
Authorities confirmed that 21-year-old gunman Robert “Bobby” Crimo had legally purchased the gun. According to the police, the victims of the attack appear to have been chosen at random.
“We think Crimo planned the attack for several weeks. He brought a high-powered rifle to the parade,” police spokesman Chris Covelli told reporters.
“He went down the fire escape to the roof of a company and started shooting,” he said.
Covelli also said that “Crimo wore women’s clothing and investigators believe he did this to hide his tattoos and identity during the escape”.
Six people were killed and 24 injured in the gun attack, in which Crimo fired more than 70 shots. He was arrested hours after the attack.
“Crio got out of the way, dropped his rifle, and mingled with the crowd,” the spokesperson said.
