The man who opened fire during an Independence Day parade near Chicago, killing at least seven people, bought legally two high-powered rifles and three more weapons, despite the authorities having to travel to his residence twice in 2019 for suicide threats and violent attackspolice said Tuesday.
Lake County State Attorney Eric Rinehart said that if convicted of all seven counts of aggravated murder, the suspect would receive a mandatory life sentence no chance of probation. He promised that he would try to bring dozens of additional charges.
A spokesman for the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force said at a news conference that the suspected shooter, who was arrested Monday night, used a high-powered rifle. “similar to an AR-15” shoot more than 70 bullets from the top of a commercial building against a crowd gathered to watch the parade in Highland Park, an upscale community of about 30,000 on the shores of Lake Michigan.
Police said their presence was required at the suspect’s home in September 2019 after a relative called to say he was. threatening to “kill everyone” present. Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli told police seized 16 knives, a dagger and a sword, but he assured that there was no indication that he had firearms at the time.
The suspect, identified by authorities as Robert E. Crimo III, has legally purchased the rifle used in the Illinois attack in the past year, Covelli said. In all, police said, he bought five firearms, which were recovered by officers from his father’s home.
The Illinois State Police, which issues licenses for gun owners, said Crimo applied for a license in December 2019, when he was 19. His father sponsored his application.

At the time, “there was not sufficient basis for establishing a clear and present danger” and denying the request, state police said in a statement.
The authorities instead reported the death of a seventh victim. More than 30 people were injured in the attack, which Covelli said was planned by the suspect. for several weeks.

Investigators who questioned the suspect and reviewed his social media posts they did not determine the reason for the attack nor did they find any indication that it was motivated by racial, religious or other hatred, Covelli added.

During the day, FBI agents searched the garbage cans and under the picnic blankets to find further evidence at the site of the attack. In the beginning, people traded the shots for fireworks before hundreds of participants fled in terror.
The next day, within the large perimeter established by the police, there were ordinary artifacts such as strollers and deckchairs, abandoned by neighbors who fled in terror. Some people were approaching the perimeter to collect some of their belongings.
One attendee, David Shapiro, 47, said the barrage of gunfire quickly turned the parade into “chaos.”
“People didn’t immediately know where the shots were coming from, whether the gunman was in front of you or behind you, chasing you,” he said Tuesday as he retrieved a stroller and deck chairs.
Filming on Monday added a series of accidents that have upset the rituals of American life. In the last months, schools, churches, grocery stores and now the community parades have become the scene of massacres. This time around, the bloodshed came as the nation sought to find reasons to celebrate its founding and the ties that still hold it together.
Since the beginning of the year, they have been in the United States 15 shootings in which four or more people died, including that of Highland Park, according to The Associated Press / USA TODAY / Northeastern University Massacre Database.
“It sure hurts the most not just when it’s in your city, but when it’s happening right in front of you,” said Ron Tuazon, a resident who returned to the parade route to retrieve chairs, blankets, and a bicycle from a boy who the family left abandoned when filming began.
“It has become a normal occurrence,” Tuazon added. “We no longer blink. It will be pretty much the same until the laws change. ”
A police officer stopped Crimo, 21, north of the shooting scene several hours later that police released his photo and warned he was likely armed and dangerous, Highland Park Police Chief Lou Jogmen said.
