BRASIL (Reuters) – President Jair Bolsonaro said on Thursday that Western economic sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine were not having the desired effect, once again citing the “balance” position as more appropriate.

The independent stance for the president helped Brazil negotiate with Russia points of interest for the country.

“The US and European economic barriers to Russia didn’t work. My line was balance. It’s more than negotiating fertilizer, food security for the world, and the dominance of our Amazon,” the president told his supporters.

Bolsonaro reiterated his assertion that at other times Russia has openly expressed support for Brazilian sovereignty in the Amazon, emphasizing “a country that is with us on this issue of sovereignty that some do not value.”

Despite extensive Western sanctions against Russia, the war in Ukraine continues more than four months after it began.

On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the West had failed in its attempt to control Russia and that the sanctions against Moscow were causing difficulties, but not on the scale intended.
