London, Jul 8, 2022 (AFP) – Former UK finance minister Rishi Sunak, one of two senior officials whose resignation has precipitated the crisis in Boris Johnson’s cabinet, announced on Friday that he is running for the Conservative Party and therefore the government.
“I stand out to be the next chairman of the Conservative Party and your prime minister. We have to restore confidence, rebuild the economy and unite the country,” said Sunak, 42.
Sunak, the first Hindu to serve as Britain’s finance minister, resigned on Tuesday – almost at the same time as his health colleague Sajid Javid – sparking the crisis that prompted Johnson to resign as the head of the party on Thursday.
A former Goldman Sachs bank analyst and hedge fund employee, married to the daughter of Sunak, an Indian businessman whose grandparents immigrated to the UK from northern India in the 1960s, he amassed a large personal fortune before becoming an MP in 2015.
Drowning in scandal, Johnson announced on Thursday that he was resigning as chairman of the Conservative Party, which has a majority in the House. Whoever is elected in his place will automatically become prime minister until the next legislative elections scheduled for 2024.
