The death toll as a result of the collapse of part of the Marmolada glacier in the Italian Alps has risen to 11 today, and this may be the definitive balance.
“We can confirm that we have identified all the victims. We have reached 11,” said Colonel Giampietro Lago, the police’s science department director, after the deadly 11th victim’s DNA was identified.
“At this time, we don’t have any indications that allow us to think that more people might be involved,” he said.
However, the search continued on Saturday.
“Today we found technical and organic material. Now the search continues with drones and we will do the same tomorrow,” said Maurizio Fugatti, president of the Trento state.
According to Italian officials, global warming and the high temperature wave recorded this year accelerated the melting of the glacier. The presence of accumulated water under the ice raises fears that the glacier will continue to collapse.
The MP for Trento launched an investigation to determine the causes of the tragedy, but ruled out the possibility of “predictability of the event, negligence or carelessness”.
