The economic crisis that has afflicted Sri Lanka for months sparked an unprecedented protest movement from the independence of the island in 1948, culminating on Saturday with the invasion of the official residence and the promise of resignation of the president Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
President since 2019, Gotabaya Rajapaksa (73) is part of the clan that has ruled the political life of Sri Lanka for decades.
The clan leader, his brother Mahinda (76 years old), he was president of the country from 2005 to 2015. A decade in which the country’s debt to China has increased due to pharaonic infrastructure projects and suspected corruption.
Mahinda enjoys the respect of the Sinhalese ethnic majority, after crushing the Tamil Tiger guerrillas in 2009, ending 37 years of civil war. His brother, nicknamed “Terminator”, was his main right-hand man, secretary of the Ministry of Defense in charge of the armed forces and the police.
The family
When it was his turn to take power, Gotabaya has appointed his brother as prime ministerbut Mahinda had to resign in May after violent clashes between security forces and demonstrators left nine dead.
The vital tourism sector has been doubly affected for the jihadist attacks in April 2019 against hotels and churches (which resulted in 279 deaths, 45 foreigners) and the coronavirus pandemic.
