London, 10 July 2022 (AFP) – The campaign for British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to ascend to the throne begins. The following are the main candidates for the dispute for Downing Street.
Rishi Altar
Former finance minister Rishi Sunak, the first Hindu to hold the post, was the first heavyweight to enter the fray.
He is among the favorites to replace Johnson. Altar lost ground after a series of scandals revolving around the advantageous tax status of his Indian billionaire wife.
A former Goldman Sachs analyst and hedge fund employee, married to the daughter of Sunak, an Indian businessman whose grandparents immigrated to the UK from northern India in the 1960s, he amassed a substantial personal fortune before becoming an MP in 2015.
The 42-year-old Brexit advocate was elected finance minister in 2020, an important post amid the pandemic, but has been criticized for doing little to deal with the stifling cost of living crisis.
Liz Cage
Without belittling and overly critical of the protest movements known as “Awakened,” Secretary of State Liz Truss has become very popular within the Conservative Party ranks.
This 46-year-old woman was appointed head of diplomacy as a reward for her work as Minister for International Trade during the UK’s departure from the European Union.
In this position, the major free trade advocate who voted to stay in the EU before switching sides has managed to close a number of key trade deals post-Brexit.
His firm line on the invasion of Ukraine or the EU’s threats to break the Northern Ireland deal are appealing to some conservatives. He announced his candidacy on Sunday night and has already garnered the public support of many MPs.
penny mordaunt
Penny Mordaunt, 49, former Defense Secretary and current Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, was one of the names in the pro-Brexit campaign in 2016 and has since worked to negotiate trade deals for the UK.
He announced his candidacy on Sunday. Considered a good speaker, it is predicted that he could become a union candidate who can gain support from different wings of the Conservative Party.
Sajid Javid
Former health minister Sajid Javid, who announced his candidacy on Saturday, was one of the government and Conservative Party heavyweights who stepped down on Tuesday to protest the prime minister.
He was a famous banker before becoming Johnson’s finance minister as the son of a Pakistani immigrant bus driver. He resigned in 2020 and returned to government a year later.
Javid, 52, voted in favor of staying in the EU for economic benefits in 2016, but later joined the Brexit cause.
Nedim Zahavi
The newly appointed finance minister is respected among Britons after the success of the anti-covid vaccine campaign he oversaw.
Born to a Kurdish family in Baghdad in 1967, he immigrated to England at the age of nine. He founded the market research company YouGov in 2000, after 10 years he left the group to enter politics and was elected as a member of parliament.
He was appointed Minister of Education in September 2021.
Jeremy Hunt
Jeremy Hunt, 55, former Secretary of State and Health, lost the Conservative Party leadership to Boris Johnson in 2019.
Hunt, a colleague of Johnson’s and former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron’s English professor in Japan at Oxford University, was one of several people to openly challenge the prime minister in a vote of no confidence in June.
However, many consider him a person without charisma.
