An official from a presidential office said the death toll from the Russian rocket attack that hit an apartment block in eastern Ukraine over the weekend had risen to 30 as rescuers searched for survivors in the wreckage on Monday.
Rescuers were excavating a massive pile of rubble brick by brick, the remains of a five-story block hit Saturday night in the town of Chasiv Yar in Donetsk province.
A Reuters reporter saw rescuers lift one of the wreckage survivors onto a stretcher and carry the bodies of the two in white bags. Soldiers also assisted in the rescue efforts.
The State Emergency Service said nine people have been rescued so far.
Kyrylo Tymoshenko, vice president of the presidential office, said rescuers had removed 65% of the 170-tonne-weighted debris early Monday night (local time).
Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February in what it calls a special military operation, denies attacking civilians.
The Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday that a Ukrainian ground defense unit in Chasiv Yar had “destroyed the … temporary deployment point of high-precision ground weapons”.

Russia is expected to focus its attack on the eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk province, after claiming to have captured its neighbor Luhansk. Together, the two provinces make up the wider industrial zone of Donbas.
