London Under the pretext of “fighting the Kremlin’s disinformation campaign”, Canada announced a package of sanctions against Russian state media personalities and companies, including agencies news organizations Tass and Sputnik and broadcaster RT, at the G20 meeting in Indonesia on Friday (8) . “Canadian President Vladimir Putin will not stand by as he wages his illegal and unjust war and tries to justify it through disinformation, manipulation and propaganda,” Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said.

Russian state media targeted

The Canadian government’s sanctions, which were not detailed in the statement, will also apply to other Russian state media outlets, such as the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Corporation (VGTRK) and Rossiya 1.

And Roskomnadzor himself, the country’s media regulator and spokesperson for the media Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova.

TV celebrities such as presenters Ekaterina Andreeva and Olga Skabeyeva were also listed.

Andreeva was a world-renowned face when she presented the nightly news, interrupted by journalist Marina Ovsyannikova, with a poster protesting the war.

The Canadian sanctions package also includes people not directly involved with the media, such as Tigran Khudaverian, the former CEO of Yandex tech company.

The Justin Trudeau government’s statement is one of a series of attacks on Russian state media operating abroad after the invasion of Ukraine.

In March, Reuters terminated its contract to republish news produced by the Tass agency because of “content that does not comply with trust principles.”

Several countries, including the United Kingdom and Canada itself, have ordered the suspension of RT broadcasts.

Moscow reacted in May, ordering the closure of the CBC/Radio-Canada office. Foreign professionals of the network were invited to leave the country.

International director of state-owned RT on the list

Now comes the Canadian rematch. Among those banned was Sumbatovich Gasparyan, head of the International Department of state-owned media outlet Russia Today (RT), which the State Department says has “significant influence in Russia”.

The country also said it has launched a page dedicated to combating disinformation with facts, presented as “a platform to clarify how the Russian regime is using lies to justify its illegal, unwarranted and unjustified invasion of Ukraine”.

In the same package, Canada banned the import of some gold imports from Russia. The ministry reported that since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the country has imposed sanctions on more than 1,150 individuals and entities from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

But a day after the statement in the state media, the country annoyed Ukraine by saying that a turbine from Siemens Canada, used in the gas supply system to Germany, would be returned to Russia.

Russia has reduced the gas flow in the pipeline by 60% and has threatened to tighten the supply if the turbine is not returned.
