Health organization Rospotrebnadzor announced today that it has detected the first case of monkeypox in Russia.
“The infection was detected in a young man who had a characteristic rash who had returned from a trip to Europe and arrived at a medical facility,” the agency said in a statement.
“The circle of people in contact with the patient was determined,” added Rospotrebnadzor.
Europe has been affected by a significant increase in monkeypox cases since May.
Germany, England, Spain and France are among the countries with the most cases.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Committee, responsible for determining the severity of the health crisis, has scheduled a meeting on the disease for the week of July 18.
