The Kremlin said in a statement that the presidents of Russia, Turkey and Iran will meet in Tehran next week for a summit on Syria and bilateral talks amid the conflict in Ukraine.
“President (Vladimir Putin)’s July 19 trip to Iran is being prepared,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
He announced that the Russian president will hold a meeting with his Iranian counterparts Ebrahim Raisi and Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Syria, and a bilateral meeting with the latter.
Russia, Turkey and Iran are part of the so-called “Astana talks” that began in 2017 to try to resolve the conflict in Syria, which has devastated the country since 2011.
This will be Putin’s second overseas trip since the start of the Ukrainian offensive in late February, following Putin’s visit to Tajikistan in June.
