Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday called for the establishment of a “special court” to try war crimes committed by Russia.
The statement was made during a conference held in The Hague, the headquarters of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Netherlands.
Speaking via video conference, Zelensky said, “The existing judicial institutions cannot bring all criminals to justice. Therefore, a special court is needed to deal with Russia’s crimes of aggression against Ukraine.” said.
“A court that guarantees fair and legal punishment for those who started this series of disasters,” he added. The event was organized by the ICC and the European Commission to discuss ways to punish those who committed war crimes in the invasion of Ukraine.
“Children, women and men are living in terror as we speak,” said Karim Khan, prosecutor of the international court. Hours earlier, a Russian attack had left 21 dead and nearly 50 missing, including three children, in Vinnytsia, Ukraine.
The ICC has launched an investigation into possible crimes in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
