Putin signed the decree allowing the closure of foreign press offices

MOSCOW, July 14 (EFE)- Russian President Vladimir Putin this Thursday signed a decree on the country’s response to the restriction on the activities of Russian media outlets abroad, allowing the closure of their correspondent offices and the annulment of the identity of journalists.

“In the event of a ban (or restriction) on the territory of a foreign country, the activities of a Russian media organization as a response measure and on the basis of the decision of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation or his deputies, the text published on the country’s legal information site states that the activities of a foreign media may be prohibited (or restricted).

The decree, signed by Putin today, also allows local authorities to ban a media outlet that publishes “false information” about the military’s performance from operating.

Russia’s parliament had previously passed legislation giving prosecutors the power to stop foreign vehicles in response to restrictions imposed by “unfriendly countries”.

Last weekend, Russia’s communications regulator blocked the website of the German newspaper “Die Welt”, at the request of the Attorney General’s Office, on charges of publishing “false information that poses a threat to the life and health of the public”. as well as for social security”.
