The texts have almost no chance of going to the Senate stage, where the support of ten Republicans, most of them opposed to the right to abortion, would be necessary.

The US House of Representatives adopted this Friday measures to protect access to abortion in response to the change of direction of the Supreme Court, two texts that, except for surprise, will not go to the Senate stage.

“Just three weeks ago, the Supreme Court dealt a heavy blow to our fundamental rights,” denounced the Democratic president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.

“That is why (…) we are going to take new measures to defend the freedom of women in matters of procreation,” she said shortly before the vote, surrounded by elected officials dressed in green, the color of pro-abortion demonstrations.

Hardly any chance of getting to the Senate stage

The first of two bills, passed with only the votes of Democrats, would re-legalize abortion across the United States. The other would provide protection for women traveling from one US state to another for an abortion.

But these texts have almost no chance of going to the Senate stage, where the support of ten Republicans, most of them opposed to the right to abortion, would be necessary for qualified majority rules.

Since the Supreme Court decision to strike down the federal right to abortion on June 24, several conservative states have already banned abortion in their territory.

US President Joe Biden is urging Americans to unite in November’s midterm congressional elections, hoping to expand Democrats’ majority in the Senate.

But these elections are always very dangerous for the power in power, and it is very possible that the Democrats, on the contrary, lose their narrow majorities in Congress during the vote.
