JERUSALEM, July 15 (EFE)- US President Joe Biden this Friday demanded a “comprehensive” and “transparent” investigation into the death of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, promising that the US government will continue to insist on this issue.

The president, together with the head of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Mahmoud Abbas, made statements in front of a platform in the West Bank city of Bethlehem with three Palestinian flags and three US flags in the background.

Biden said Akleh’s death, whose name he didn’t pronounce correctly, was a “great loss” for his core work “to tell the world the story of the Palestinian people”.

“The United States will continue to insist on a full and transparent investigation into his death. The United States will continue to defend freedom of the press worldwide,” he said.

As Biden spoke, an empty chair remained in the room with a photo of the journalist and the words “Voice of Palestine” in Arabic.

Several media professionals covering the action wore black shirts that included the phrase “Justice for Shireen.”

The journalist, who is also an American citizen, died in May this year while covering an Israeli operation in the Yen refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.

Both the Palestinian National Authority, some organizations and international media blame the Israeli army for Abu Akleh’s death.

But the Jerusalem regime objects to the version.

A group of experts from the US conducted their own investigation, but could not come to a “conclusive conclusion” about the origin of the bullet that hit the journalist and killed him.

Washington said it was “probably” Israeli forces who shot, but there was no reason to believe it was an intentional act, sparking outrage among Palestinian officials and the family of the “Al Jazeera” television channel reporter.
