Washington, July 15, 2022 (AFP) – The United States House of Representatives on Friday approved measures to protect access to abortion in response to the Supreme Court ruling. Unless it comes as a surprise, the two texts will not stand up to Senate scrutiny.

“Only three weeks ago, the Supreme Court dealt a major blow to our fundamental rights,” said Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives.

“So … we will take new steps to defend women’s reproductive freedom,” he said shortly before the vote, surrounded by congressmen dressed in green garb used in pro-abortion demonstrations.

The first of the bills, passed only by Democrats’ votes, would re-legalize abortion nationwide. The other would provide protection to women traveling from state to state to have an abortion.

But these texts have little chance of ratification in the Senate, where they will need the support of ten Republicans, many of whom are against the right to abortion.

Since the Supreme Court overturned the federal right to abortion on June 24, some conservative states have outlawed abortion in their own territories.

US President Joe Biden is urging Americans to vote for his party in the November midterm elections, hoping to expand his majority in the Senate.

But these elections often benefit the opposition and are likely to cause Democrats to lose their narrow majority in Congress.
