This death brings to two the number of people who have died during their working day in the Madrid suburbs due to intense heat, since the start of the heat wave more than a week ago.

Seizures and body temperature above 40°C

According to a spokesman for the emergency services, the victim felt unwell on Friday afternoon while working with some colleagues in a warehouse in Móstoles, on the outskirts of Madrid, with very high temperatures.

“When they arrived (the rescuers) he was having convulsions” and had a body temperature “of 42.9 degrees,” explained this spokesman. He died the night of Friday to Saturday in a Madrid hospital where he was admitted.

The city of Madrid has communicated this Saturday for its part the death of a 60-year-old road worker, also a victim of heat stroke during his working day. When the paramedics took him in, his body temperature was 41.6 degrees.

Investigation opened by the labor inspection

“I will always carry my father’s example with me,” his son testified on Twitter, describing “a great man, a worker to death.” “Wherever you are, you will continue to give us this strength that you transmitted to us in life,” he added.

“This type of event should never happen”, the two main Spanish unions, UGT and CCOO, denounced in a joint press release, calling on all the affected actors to act to avoid this type of situation.

“The labor inspectorate is investigating” the death of the Madrid municipal employee, the communist Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, tweeted. “You have to see why the (prevention) measures communicated to the companies (…) have not been implemented to prevent this type of accident,” she added.
