The new vote to eliminate one of the five candidates to replace British Prime Minister Boris Johnson ended on Monday (18) with centrist MP Tom Tugendhat being kicked out of the race.
Former British Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak continued to lead the race for prime minister with 115 votes, 14 more than the second ballot.
Then comes former Defense Secretary Penny Mordaunt with 82 (-1); Secretary of State Liz Truss, 71 (+7); and former Equality Minister Kemi Badenoch, with 58 (+9).
The results show that Sunak is poised to compete in the runoff with one of two candidates that will face the vote of the broader Conservative Party members to become leader and prime minister in September.
However, the scenario could still change depending on who Tugendhat supporters choose to support. Prior to the vote, the MP’s allies had already expected her elimination, as the previously excluded candidate Suella Braverman was unlikely to take over many of her supporters.
The next ballot will take place this Tuesday (19) and Wednesday (20), when “Tory” lawmakers will nominate the two final nominees.
