On Tuesday, the United States placed Russia on a list of countries that deal with human trafficking, forced labor “policies or patterns”, or recruit or use underage soldiers by security forces or government-sponsored armed groups.
The State Department included the lists in a section titled “state-sponsored trafficking in human beings” in its annual report on human trafficking, published for the first time after the request of the US Congress in 2019.
Russia is featured several times in the report for its invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24 and the vulnerability of millions of Ukrainian refugees who have left the country to human trafficking.
The Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the allegations in the report.
In addition to Russia, the new section lists Afghanistan, Myanmar, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and five other countries with a “documented human trafficking policy or model”, forced labor in government-affiliated sectors, sex slavery in state camps, or. recruiting or recruiting children as soldiers.
The report also includes a separate list of 12 countries that employ or employ child soldiers, including Russia and others on the new list of state sponsors of these activities.
