Seventeen congressional Democrats, including progressive Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, were arrested during an abortion rights protest outside the Supreme Court building in Washington on Tuesday, police said.
Capitol Police announced on Twitter that protesters blocked traffic on a nearby street and received three warnings before they were arrested: “We made a total of 35 arrests” for creating a crowd blocking traffic. “This number includes 17 members of Congress.”
The little show, Roe v. The Wade Act of 1973 guaranteeing the right to abortion at the federal level.
“I was arrested today while participating in an act of civil disobedience with my members of Congress outside the Supreme Court,” Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar said. “I will continue to do everything I can to raise awareness of the attack on our reproductive rights!”
New York Representative Carolyn Maloney was also arrested and issued a statement saying, “If women don’t have control over their bodies and can’t make decisions about their own health, including reproductive care, there is no democracy. The Republican Party and the right.” “The extremists behind this decision are pro-life control, not pro-life control of the bodies of women, girls and anyone else who might get pregnant.”
Footage of the protest shows Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and others being led uncuffed by the police as they greet their supporters.
