After three years of wrestling with former U.S. President Donald Trump, the Pulitzer Prize Board completed its internal review of The New York Times (NYT) and Washington Post (WP) victories in 2018 and retained the honor for both.
The publications divided the “National Reporting” award into 20 stories that bring evidence of the Trump administration’s affiliation with the Russian government and the country’s interference in supporting the then-Republican candidate in the 2016 American election.
Newspaper representatives did not comment on the decision. But Trump said in a statement that the only Pulitzer that the two newspapers would have to take would be with the creation of the “disinformation” category.
Pulitzer finds no irregularities in winners
The Pulitzer Prize was created by Columbia University in 1917 and is awarded in 16 categories each year by journalists or organizations across the country. It is the most important in the USA and one of the most important in the world.

Challenges led the Pulitzer Board to commission two independent reviews of winning stories by people not affiliated with the papers.

Trump, who has always denied any interference or aid from Russia to defeat Hillary Clinton, has called for the cancellation of the NYT and WP awards at least three times.
In October last year, he addressed the issue in an open letter, saying that news outlets’ reports were “based on false reports that there is a non-existent link between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign.”
He argued that the stories were “nothing more than a politically motivated hoax attempting to create a false narrative that my campaign allegedly conspired with Russia, although there was no evidence to support this claim.”
In May of this year, Trump threatened to sue the award for defamation if the honors were not revoked, in a letter to Marjorie Miller, director of the Pulitzer Prizes, the NYT reported at the time.

“If the Pulitzer Prize has become a well-known propagandist of false and liberal politics, the Pulitzer Council should say so,” he added.
The former US president said he would continue to do “everything possible” to “correct wrongs” caused by the Pulitzer Prizes.
