(Reuters) – Russia on Wednesday accused Ukraine of firing two drones at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine’s partially occupied Zaporizhzhia region on Monday, but said the reactor was not damaged.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the report, and Ukrainian officials did not immediately comment. The facility is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant.

“Ukrainian nationalist formations used two kamikaze drones to attack facilities at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – one drone was destroyed while approaching the facility,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement. Said.

“It was pure luck that it didn’t damage the plant equipment and cause a man-made disaster.”

Previously, Ukraine had accused Moscow of keeping troops and storing military equipment around the power plant.

Ukraine’s state-owned Energoatom, whose employees still operate the plant even though the area is under Russian control, issued a statement accusing Russian forces of requesting access to the engine rooms of the plant’s three reactors to store tanks and equipment on site.

Energoatom said, without providing evidence, that Russian troops did this because they were afraid of the “gifts” of the Ukrainian army. The company did not comment on the alleged impact of the drone.
