The Carlos III Institute of Health reported that more than a thousand people died in Spain due to the intense heat wave that hit the country.
According to the Spanish institute’s estimates, at least 1,047 people died from the high temperatures between 10 and 19 July.
The strong heat hitting Spain, which has recorded maximum temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius in various parts of the country, will be linked to the consequences of global warming.
“Climate change kills,” warned the country’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, last Monday (18).
The current heatwave has caused some fires in Spanish territory such as Calatayud, forcing at least 1,700 people to evacuate and interrupting the operation of high-speed trains between the cities of Madrid and Barcelona.
Heat waves are characterized by high temperatures for several consecutive days, often associated with strong sunlight and lack of ventilation. These climatic conditions can pose risks to the health of the population, especially the elderly, chronically ill, children and pregnant women.
