Amid tensions over the conflict in Ukraine, Russia’s Ministry of Justice on Thursday called for the dissolution of the Jewish Agency in Russia, which deals specifically with immigration in Israel.
Basmany in Moscow, “The Court has received an administrative complaint from the department of the Ministry of Justice in Moscow, demanding the dissolution (…) of the non-profit ‘Promoting Relations with the Jewish Diaspora, Jewish Agency Sokhnut. The Court, Ekaterina Buravtsova, Interfax news transmitted by the agency.
The spokesperson said a “judge has requested a meeting” on July 28 to address the issue.
Following the court’s announcement, Israel said it would send a delegation to Moscow next week “to ensure the continuity of Jewish Agency activity in Russia,” according to Prime Minister Yair Lapid’s office.
Founded in 1929, the organization is responsible for organizing the immigration of people of Jewish descent to Israel. It began operations in Russia in 1989, two years before the collapse of the Soviet Union. After that, hundreds of thousands of Jews from all over the USSR went to Israel.
The request for closure comes in the context of tensions in relations between Israel and Russia, following the Israeli government’s condemnation of Russia’s offensive in Ukraine.
