A strong explosion in a building located in an exclusive area of ​​the Uruguayan capital Montevideo It left injured, several apartments destroyed, and side effects in nearby factories.

The accident occurred a few minutes after 9 on this Friday in a building located in Leyenda Patria at 2900, in front of the park of Villa Biarritz, in Punta Carretas.

According to El País, there have been reports so far seven wounded. Three of them were referred to health centers in serious condition with compromised airways and burns.

Five other adults were injured, while no minors were affected, police said.

Police officers and firefighters were evacuating people who were there, mainly among the third and fourth floor where there was also a fire.

The explosion was of such magnitude that the remains of the debris were thrown into the air and reached the park. Also, the blast broke the glass for several blocks around.

The causes of the accident are being investigated. A neighbor of the building told the press that it was a “gas leak” and that a few days ago he smelled a “strange smell”.

Luis Alberto Heber, Minister of the Interior, was present on the spot and said he had met “a disaster”.

Although there is significant structural damage, the authorities excluding a possible collapse.

In social networks, neighbors and witnesses showed pictures of the significant damage.

“I don’t know what happened, it all exploded,” warns a young man from inside the complex as he filmed how his house turned out. “He tore it all up,” exclaims the victim who had cuts on his hand.
