Five people died and six others were injured in the night from Friday to Saturday in the fire at a fireworks warehouse in Lima, Peruvian firefighters announced. Among the five bodies found is that of a young woman who lived there, Brigadier Giovanni Jacome said.
According to the latter, the victims “may be members of the same family, or workers. We cannot specify.”
The Peruvian Minister of Health, Jorge López Peña, for his part, indicated that “six people were injured by burns,” and five of them were transferred to a hospital in the region, in a tweet. The minister lamented the five victims, and specified that his team “provides psychological support to those affected by this fire.”
17 fire trucks mobilized
The fire affected a piece of land of about 500 m2 where there was a fireworks workshop and several houses in a poor neighborhood in the east of the Peruvian capital, Brigadier Jácome said earlier.
According to him, the fire was controlled. And at least 17 fire trucks and 10 ambulances from the Ministry of Health responded.
Fires are common on the outskirts of the Peruvian capital, where old buildings serve as warehouses for flammable materials without any safety standards.
