Russian authorities on Sunday blocked the website of independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta’s new editorial project, which was suspended in March due to crackdown on criticism of the attack in Ukraine. The publication was edited by 2021 Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov.
On July 15, the editorial staff of this medium published a paper magazine available on the Internet under the name “Novaya Rasskaz-Gazeta”.
In their first edition, they analyzed the totalitarianism and ideology of President Vladimir Putin. A week later, the Russian telecommunications controller blocked the site at the prosecutor’s request.
On Sunday, AFP journalists found the site inaccessible without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).
“Our website has been maxed out. We drove for seven days and nine hours,” the newsroom said in a statement. They also allege that the Russian lawmaker, without providing further details, accused them of “discrediting” the Russian armed forces by using a new offense that has been used since March to suppress the slightest criticism of military intervention in Ukraine.
“There are currently no complaints about our paper magazine. We can continue to prepare the second issue,” they added. They asked readers “not to be discouraged.”
In late March, the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, one of the main pillars of the investigation into corruption and serious human rights violations by the Russian elite in Russia, was forced to suspend its online and print publication.
