About 600 people live in a 4 kilometer radius around Sakurajima and the approach to the crater was banned for six years, in 2016.
“The residential areas of the cities of Arimura and Furusato, three kilometers from the peak of the Sakurajima volcano, should be on maximum alert,” the agency said, recommending immediate evacuation. As reported, there are only 77 people who refuse to evacuate.
The volcano, which regularly erupts smoke and ash, is one of Japan’s major tourist attractions. Sakurajima was once an island, but due to other eruptions it is now connected to a peninsula.
The Asian country had issued an evacuation alert when the volcano on the island of Kuchinoerabu, also in Kagoshima, erupted in 2015.
Japan is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire and has 110 active volcanoes on its territory.
