In Yamaguchi, Japan, 42 people have been injured by monkeys since the beginning of July.
These animals are common in the Japanese archipelago, where they are sometimes considered a nuisance when breaking into homes or looting crops.
However, it is rare for these little monkeys to attack humans directly, as has been the case when children and adults have been attacked in Yamaguchi in recent weeks.
“The entire town of Yamaguchi is surrounded by mountains, so it is not unusual to find monkeys in the area,” a city official told AFP today.
“But it’s rare to see so many attacks in such a short time.”
The same source continued, “At first, only children and women were attacked. But lately the elderly and adult men have been attacked.”
Local authorities have been on alert since the first complaints were filed on July 8, but so far they have not caught any monkeys. It is not yet known whether it is a particularly aggressive, isolated group of animals or a behavior that spreads among these primates.
