The Pope francesco will meet this Monday with the survivors of a former residential school in indigenous peoples in Canadawhere he will renew his request for forgiveness for the role that the Church has played for more than a century in the violence inflicted on thousands of children of indigenous peoples.
The 85-year-old Argentine pontiff arrived on Sunday in Edmonton (province of Alberta) for a long-awaited six-day visit by local aborigines mainly from three groups: First Nations, Meti and Inuit.
At the center of this “penitential pilgrimage” there is the painful chapter of “residential schools” for indigenous children, a system of cultural assimilation that caused the deaths of at least 6,000 minors from disease, malnutrition, neglect or abuse from the late 19th century to the 1990s, creating trauma between generations.
