About 6,800 hectares of forest in the western state of California have been burned by “Oak Fire,” a “very fast-moving” fire, local firefighters said on Monday.
“It’s moving very fast and the window for getting people out is limited,” California fire chief Jon Heggie told CNN.
He added that more than 2,500 firefighters battled the fire, whose pace of pacing and behavior were “truly unprecedented”.
Beginning Friday, the “Oak Fire” is ravaging Mariposa County, near Yosemite National Park and its famous giant sequoias.
The flames have burned 10 properties so far, damaged five people, but threatened thousands.
According to Jon Heggie, this “megafire” is fed by dead trees and dry shrubs in an area that has long suffered severe water shortages.
“This is a direct result of climate change,” Heggie said, noting that California is facing a 10-year drought.
