The head of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, categorically condemned on Monday the executions of four prisoners by the Burmese junta with the aim, according to him, of “annihilating democracy”, and said he was convinced that they would not discourage supporters of the democracy in Burma.
“This reprehensible violence demonstrates the regime’s total disregard for human rights and the rule of law,” the Secretary of State said in a statement after the executions of four men, including two opponents.
“The regime’s show trials and these executions represent blatant attempts to destroy democracy,” he added. “These acts will never stop the determination of the brave people of Burma.”
The military junta is still in power
“The United States stands with the people of Burma in their fight for freedom and democracy and calls on the regime to respect the democratic aspirations of the people, who have shown that they do not want to live another day under the tyranny of the military junta,” Antony continued. Blinken.
The United States has imposed a series of sanctions on Burma since last year’s military junta coup that ousted former leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, closing the door on a decade of Washington-backed democratic transition. .
The head of US diplomacy met in early July with young Burmese democratic activists. He acknowledged that the sanctions had not brought any results so far and vowed to keep up the pressure on the board.
