The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided to send the Brazilian ambassador to Ukraine back to Kiev to fulfill his duties in the Ukrainian capital, about five months after the envoy left the city due to the Russian invasion.

Ambassador Norton de Andrade Mello Rapesta had left Ukraine in early March to work in Moldova, where he also held the post of ambassador. According to Itamaraty, the decision was taken because of “deteriorating security conditions in Ukraine” at the time.

In a note, the ministry stressed that the Brazilian embassy in Kiev has remained open since the beginning of the conflict, with about 250 Brazilians assisted by Itamaraty in the region, mainly to issue documents and cross the border.

“After the completion of the evacuation of Brazilians who want to leave Ukraine, the work of the consular service stations temporarily established in the cities of Chisinau (Moldova), Kosice (Slovakia), Lviv and Chernivtsi (Ukraine) were closed.” said in the statement.

“Itamaraty continues to pay attention to the development of the conflict and is ready to take any necessary urgent action to assist the citizens of Brazil,” he said.
