The photos did not go unnoticed. Snapshots of the Ukrainian presidential couple taken by Annie Leibovitz for fashion were published on the cover of the US magazine on Tuesday, along with an interview with First Lady Olena Zelenska.
A post followed by a wave of criticism on social media, as Ukrainian troops continue to fight Russian soldiers. “What a horrible trivialization of the Ukraine war […] What a way to play the game of Putin and his propaganda,” comments one user.
“A huge number of Ukrainian soldiers die every day, and Zelensky [se dit] ‘Let’s do a shoot with Vogue,'” jokes another.
“It’s like watching the Hunger Games”
In the photos, the couple poses holding hands and embracing in the presidential palace, but also outside. Olena Zelenska appears at the Antonov airport, in front of the remains of a destroyed plane, with her hair pulled back and her gaze far away, surrounded by female soldiers.
she bears witness to fashion of these five months of war since the Russian invasion on February 24. “The last few months have been the worst in my life and the worst in the life of all Ukrainians,” he said, adding that he was “looking forward to victory” and had “no doubts” that Ukraine would win.
“We had happy lives and we never thought this could happen. But we have hope,” she still told the magazine.
But for some netizens, this post is similar to “a movie”. “It’s disgusting! It’s like watching the movie The Hunger Games where the elite lives in the capital, without caring about the world or about the people from other neighborhoods (Oblasts in this case) who die every day!” commented one of them.
