North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country was “ready to put into action” its nuclear deterrence in the face of a possible future military conflict with the United States and South Korea.
According to the official Korean Central News Agency from Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un said in his speech on Wednesday, “Our country’s nuclear deterrent is also ready to mobilize its absolute power in a reliable, accurate and swift manner in accordance with its mission.”
In his speech to veterans of the 1950-1953 Korean War on the occasion of “Victory Day,” Kim Jong Un added that the country’s armed forces were “fully prepared” to face “any military conflict with the United States.”
In June, the United States and South Korea threatened a “quick” response in the event of a new nuclear test by North Korea, with further sanctions and even a review of the United States’ “military stance”. This week, the US military conducted a real-time shooting exercise with Apache attack helicopters in South Korea for the first time since 2019.
Kim Jong Un also criticized South Korea’s neoconservative president, Yoon Suk Yeol, who took office in May and promised to be tougher on his northern neighbor. “To talk of military action against our nation, which has the absolute weapons they fear most, is an absurd and very dangerous act of self-destruction,” said Kim.
“Such a dangerous attempt will be promptly punished by our mighty power, and Yoon Suk Yeol’s government and army will be destroyed,” the North Korean leader threatened.
“Kim’s rhetoric exaggerates external threats to justify his regime focused on military spending in a struggling economy,” said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul.
“North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs violate international law, but Kim Jong Un is trying to present his destabilizing weapons as a fair effort in self-defense,” the expert said.
