Russia on Thursday launched several attacks on military infrastructure and residential buildings in Ukraine, whose forces are trying to retake the territory occupied by Moscow in a counterattack in the south.

At least five people were killed and 25 injured after the Russian bombardment of Kropivnitskyi, about 300 kilometers south of Kiev in central Ukraine, regional governor Andriy Raikovitch said.

Reported by the Interfax-Ukraine news agency, Raikovitch said 12 soldiers were among the wounded, and that the bombings destroyed “aviation equipment”, an An-26 civilian aircraft and trainer aircraft, as well as neighboring buildings.

Hours ago, Ukraine reported that Russia partially destroyed a military base in Liutij, about 30km north of the Ukrainian capital.

Ukrainian military official Oleksiy Gromov said missiles, one of which was shot down by the Ukrainian air force, were launched from the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014.

In addition, Russia bombed the Chernihiv region in northeastern Ukraine with several rockets. According to Gromov, the attack was launched from neighboring Belarus, an ally of Russia.

Ukraine “will not give up and will not give up,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Telegram.

In the occupied Kherson region in the south of the country, Ukrainian troops are conducting a counteroffensive to reclaim lost territory following a conflict that has left thousands of people dead and displaced millions after five months of conflict, according to the UN.

“It’s a busy morning. Once again we are experiencing missile terror,” Zelensky added.

Governor Valentin Reznichenko said at least one person was killed and two others injured in an attack in the center of Dnipro.

In the northeast, two S-300 missile strikes hit Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkiv, earlier in the day.

“You are safe only in bunkers and in the subway. But that’s all,” the mayor Igor Terekhov told AFP.

The city, a few kilometers from the Russian border, is under heavy bombardment, although the Russians never succeeded in occupying it.

Having failed to capture the capital at the end of March, Russian forces focused their attacks on southern and eastern Ukraine, although they continued to bombard other parts of the region.

In the Donetsk province, which together with Lugansk forms the Donbass region (east), Moscow troops continue to advance near Siversk and Bakhmut.

Local emergency services said a Russian bomb killed two people in Toretsk and three people could be rescued from the rubble.

The region, which Russia is trying to completely conquer, has been partially controlled by pro-Russian separatists since 2014.

Further south, in Mykolaiv, near the Black Sea, another “large” bombardment destroyed a school and injured at least one person, according to regional governor Vitaliy Kim.

The city is less than 100 kilometers from Kherson, whose namesake region fell to the Russians shortly after the February 24 invasion.

The region is strategically critical as it is adjacent to the Crimean peninsula.

In recent weeks, the Ukrainian army, supported by long-range artillery supplied by the Western powers, has regained ground.

Three villages have been retaken in the past two weeks, Ukrainian military official Gromov said.

The day before, the occupation authorities reported that a Ukrainian offensive had hit the Antonovsky Bridge over the Dnieper River, which was needed to supply Moscow’s troops.

In both Kherson and neighboring Zaporizhzhia, occupation forces said they had arrested 21 “accomplices” of the Ukrainian army.

According to a military source quoted by the state news agency Ria Novosti, Russian security services also reportedly deployed a group of Ukrainian agents in Kherson who provided information to the Ukrainian army about the movements of Russian troops.

Since the beginning of the occupation, the two countries have made several prisoner exchanges.
