The future government of Colombia and Venezuela has announced their intention to “progressively” resume diplomatic relations between the two countries, which have been frozen since 2019, when Bogota did not recognize the re-election of President Nicolás Maduro.
The idea is to initiate a rapprochement process after Gustavo Petro, who will be the first leftist to rule Colombia, took office on 7 August.
Future Colombian Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva met with his Venezuelan counterpart, Carlos Faría, in Táchira to discuss “the gradual normalization of diplomatic and consular relations,” according to a statement released by the two sides.
“It was a great pleasure to be here in the company of Minister Faría,” said Leyva. The two promised to “consolidate the ties of friendship and cooperation by reviewing all issues of bilateral interest, for the benefit of the happiness of our peoples”.
Faría said rapprochement should lead to “the gradual opening of the border” between the two countries.
Colombia’s current president, Iván Duque, still officially recognizes opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela.
