Entitled “Summer is ours”, this communication operation launched on Wednesday only on social networks aims to undermine beauty standards and especially free women from the dictate of thinness.

The poster shows five smiling women in swimsuits on the beach, of different ages and body types, several of whom are overweight, one is black, one has pink hair, one is topless, has had a mastectomy And she only has one breast.

The details of the drawing allow us to see the hair of one of the women on the legs and armpits, the curls of several of them or even their stretch marks.

Behind this campaign, the Women’s Institute, a body directly dependent on the Ministry of Equality, tweeted the image with the following explanation: “bodies are diverse, free of gender stereotypes, and occupy all spaces. Summer also belongs to us , to us. Free, equal and diverse”.

A criticized operation

The hashtag “summer is ours” has circulated a lot in recent days, when websites, magazines and advertisements boast, as every year, of “bikini surgery” or “summer body”, referring to the body exposed in plain sight, in a bathroom. suit, on the beach.

Some, like Cayo Lara, former secretary general of Izquierda Unida, a small leftist coalition integrated into the radical leftist Podemos party (an ally of the Socialist party in the governing coalition), expressed their disagreement.

In response to Equality Minister Irene Montero, who had just tweeted about the campaign (“all bodies are valid and we all have the right to enjoy life, without guilt or shame”), Lara said she felt we had “created a problem where there was none.

The Podemos party responded then from its official account: “If the bodies bother you, you can always stay home to tweet, without worries.”
