The Uruguayan president, Luis Lacalle Pou, visited the headquarters of the Broad Front this Friday with the aim of presenting the social security reform that the government intends to promote. So he was the leader of the National Party the first Uruguayan head of state in 15 years to visit the opposition headquartersaccording to local media.
“The first and foremost thing is that this social security reform bill requires the broadest possible consensus; it is a matter for everyone, not a government,” said Lacalle Pou, who visited the FA headquarters. in an unusual event for a president.
What led Lacalle Pou to make this decision is related to the fact that, starting this week, the government has sought to advance in one of the greatest political challenges, which is the reform of the pension and pension system.
On Wednesday he presented the bill to the ruling coalition parties and this Friday he personally addressed the Broad Front headquarters. The proposal includes raising the retirement age to 65with the exception of some employment sectors, and at the same time a convergence from 2043 of all the current subsystems into a single one.
“Today we took a break in the daily political battle because this is everyone’s problem, today we came to talk about the future of Uruguayan retirement,” Lacalle Pou said in a press conference after the meeting.
“If we don’t do something in the time we have left in government, those who will come later they will have to take more urgent measures. It is a sustainable and supportive system, in terms of minimum pension benefits, some pensions and gender issues. The system ends in 20 years. It is a sustainable and solidarity issue “, insisted the president.
According to the website of the newspaper La República, Lacalle Pou said he could not “look aside knowing that this is an urgent problem of the Uruguayans“.
Upon arrival at the opposition headquarters, Lacalle Pou accepted the invitation of the FA chief, Fernando Pereira, to take a tour of the house where the center-left alliance has its command.
“I have no problems; I have all day for you today“, replied the president, according to the website of the daily El Observador.
The same site reported that 15 years have passed since a president last visited an opposition headquarters: in April 2007, Frente Amplio member Tabaré Vázquez met in the former National Party building with the then in office, Jorge Larrañaga.
After the meeting, Pereira told the press that the Broad Front wants to know if “this is a project of the president or a project of the government“.
