The Spanish Ministry of Health reported this Friday (29) the death of a person with monkeypox, the first death of a sick patient in Europe.
According to the Health Alerts and Emergencies Coordination Center of the Ministry of Health, 4,298 people were infected with the virus in Spain, one of the countries with the highest number of cases in the world, and one of them died.
When asked about the impact of the virus on death, a ministry spokesman told AFP that only an autopsy could answer.
“Of the 3,750 patients with available information, 120 were hospitalized (3.2%) and one died,” says the ministry’s report this Friday, based on data from the National Network of Epidemiological Surveillance.
Recently, a death from monkeypox was announced in Brazil: a 41-year-old man with comorbidities in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. This is the first death linked to the disease outside of Africa and the sixth worldwide in the current outbreak.
The World Health Organization (WHO) activated the maximum alert level on Saturday to strengthen the fight against the disease, which affects nearly 17,000 people in 74 countries.
Monkeypox – first detected in humans in 1970 – is less dangerous and contagious than the ancient smallpox, which was eradicated in 1980.
