In a telephone interview with Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, Emmanuel Macro “said his determination to ensure” that war crimes committed in Ukraine “do not go unpunished.”

The fight continues in Ukraine. And five months after the start of the conflict, Kyiv is still accusing Moscow of being responsible for war crimes. During an exchange with Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, Emmanuel Macron “reaffirmed his support for the Ukrainian people and his resistance (…) as war crimes increase”, indicates the Elysee.

The President of the Republic “expressed his determination so that these crimes do not go unpunished.” And after having sent a team of forensic experts to the scene, “France continues its support by donating a mobile DNA analysis laboratory”.

According to the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, such a laboratory has already been provided in Kyiv by mid-July. It allows rapid genetic analysis of a large number of biological samples.

Because if the war continues and is likely to last for many more months, investigations into crimes committed by Russian soldiers began in April. A month and a half after the start of the invasion, more than 5,600 investigations had been opened.

And France contributes to it. Sixteen gendarmes and two French forensic doctors were sent to Ukraine in early April to lend their scientific expertise in identifying victims and collecting evidence of suspected war crimes.

In Paris, the national anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office has also opened several “war crimes” investigations into acts committed against French citizens in Ukraine since the Russian invasion.

“Resisting Russian Aggression”

During his interview with Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, Emmanuel Macron “confirmed France’s desire to continue supporting the Ukrainian armed forces to enable them to resist Russian aggression,” the Elysee continues.

The two leaders also discussed at length the issue of the resumption of grain exports, when a first ship left Odessa port on Monday morning.
