The death of the Nigerian man who left two children behind caused great uproar in Italy, especially as no one defended the victim, while several people filmed the attack in the heart of the city.

The footage shows a white man pressing Ogorchukwu hard to the ground and vainly trying to fight for his life. Police have arrested a 32-year-old Italian suspect who is investigating a murder and robbery as he will retrieve the street vendor’s cell phone after the attacks.

Police announced at a press conference that the investigation is continuing and has not brought any evidence that the crime was committed with racism so far. For the police officers involved, the violence would have been triggered by the interaction of the two men on the street.

In one hypothesis presented by the authorities, the Nigerian would ask the Italian for money, which he would refuse and then continue to attack.

According to the EFE news agency, the suspect claimed that the fight started because the victim “persistently begged for alms” and that he grabbed the arm of his girlfriend, who testified as a witness.

crying for justice

According to the information obtained by the BBC, Ogorchukwu started selling products on the street after his traffic accident and lost his job due to injuries to his legs.

On Saturday, hundreds of people from the local Nigerian community protested in the streets of Civitanova Marche, demanding justice.

Italian politicians from different parties condemned the attack.

“Unprecedented brutality. Widespread indifference. There can be no justification,” Left Democratic Party leader Enrico Letta said on Twitter.

Matteo Salvini, a far-right senator and former minister, said “security has no color” and “must go back to being a human right”.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Italy Mfawa Omini Abam condemned the attack and sent condolences to Ogorchukwu’s wife and family.

The embassy said it is working with Italian authorities to ensure justice is done and to help Ogorchukwu’s family. The ambassador urged members of the Nigerian community in Italy to remain calm and refrain from taking justice into their own hands.
