Governor Andy Beshear, in a statement on social media, said that heavy rains hindered rescue operations and the death toll in the flood disaster in the eastern Kentucky state of the USA increased to 37.
“We ended the day with more heartbreaking news from eastern Kentucky. We can confirm that the death toll has risen to 37 and many more are missing. Let’s pray for these families and come together to embrace our Kentucky brothers and sisters,” the politician wrote.
Beshear said the number of people killed is expected to continue to rise as search teams expand into flood-affected areas. Last Monday (1st), work was severely hampered by rain.
Last week, more than eight inches of rain fell in parts of Kentucky in 24 hours, causing unprecedented flash flooding. Many areas remain inaccessible as roads are turned into rivers and bridges and roads have been swept away by floods.
Floods in eastern Kentucky are the latest in a series of extreme weather events. Last December, about 60 people died as a result of a tornado in the western part of the US state.
