Russia said on Tuesday that China had the right to take “necessary measures to protect its sovereignty”, describing a visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as an “obvious provocation”.
“The Chinese side has the right to take necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity regarding the Taiwan issue,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
“We are absolutely in solidarity with China”
The Chinese military said it would “launch a series of targeted military actions in response” to the visit. “We urge Washington to refrain from actions that undermine regional stability and international security and to recognize the new geopolitical reality, in which there is no longer a place for US hegemony,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Earlier on Tuesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the visit was causing “increased tension” in the region and accused Washington of choosing “the path of confrontation.”
“We want to emphasize once again that we stand in absolute solidarity with China, their attitude towards the issue is understandable and absolutely justified,” he said.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said: “Washington brings destabilization to the world. Not a single conflict resolved in recent decades, but many conflicts provoked.”
