The British government said on Tuesday that nearly 700 migrants and asylum seekers crossed the English Channel into the UK on Monday, setting a new record this year.

Recent arrivals show that the government’s controversial policy of deporting anyone who attempts to cross the dangerous border to Rwanda has not deterred them.

The Defense Department said 696 migrants arrived on Monday by 14 small boats, the highest daily number in 2022, surpassing 600 for the second time this year.

Large groups of people, including young children, were taken to Ramsgate on the Kent coast in southeast England, before being taken by bus to processing centres.

So far, more than 17,000 people have arrived in the UK after crossing one of the world’s busiest shipping lines, the English Channel, in small boats, in 2022, according to government data.

More than 28,500 people, mostly young men, arrived on British shores last year.

The daily record, 853, was set in November 2021.

Depending on the weather conditions and control measures on the north coast of France, the number of passes varies throughout the year.

The UK has announced a new extradition policy for Rwanda this year in an effort to curb incoming arrivals. However, the first flight, scheduled to begin in June, was suspended due to legal issues and the policy remained stagnant.

The UK sends tens of millions of euros a year to France to help stop boat crossings, including extra beach patrols and appropriate equipment such as night vision goggles.

Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, two conservative rivals vying to replace Prime Minister Boris Johnson, have pledged to stick to Rwanda’s policy.
